Mastering Delegation: A Key Skill for Legal Professionals

Delegating tasks can be challenging—especially in the fast-paced legal industry, where precision and deadlines are critical. Maybe you feel it’s easier to do things yourself, or you worry about the quality of work if you hand it off. However, mastering delegation isn’t just about lightening your workload—it’s about developing your team, increasing efficiency, and ensuring you focus on the most impactful aspects of your role.

So, how do you delegate effectively? How can you stay involved without micromanaging? And how do you overcome the mindset that you’re the only one who can do it right?

Why Delegation Matters

According to leadership expert Dave Kerpen, the biggest hurdle to effective delegation isn’t the process itself—it’s overcoming the emotional barriers that make it difficult to let go. Fear of mistakes, control issues, and perfectionism can all contribute to hesitation. But in reality, delegation is about managing your energy and focusing on where you can make the greatest impact.

Emily Morgan, founder of Delegate Solutions, emphasizes that your time is your most valuable resource. By handing off certain responsibilities, you free yourself up for high-level work that requires your expertise—whether that’s client strategy, business development, or mentorship.

How to Delegate Effectively in the Legal Industry

1. Identify What’s Holding You Back

Before improving your delegation skills, recognize what’s preventing you from letting go. Do you:

  • Feel like you always need to be in control?
  • Worry that someone else won’t do it “right”?
  • Think it’s quicker to handle things yourself?

Acknowledging these tendencies is the first step toward change.

2. Determine What Can Be Delegated

Legal professionals often hold on to more than they need to. According to Kerpen, there are only three things a leader shouldn’t delegate:

  • Strategy & vision – Your role is to set direction.
  • Hiring decisions – Ensuring the right talent is in place is crucial.
  • Budget & resources – You need to oversee what’s necessary to get the job done.

Everything else? It’s fair game for delegation. From administrative work and document preparation to research and scheduling, many tasks can be assigned to junior team members, legal assistants, or external support.

3. Start Small & Build Trust

If you struggle with delegation, begin with low-risk tasks. Assign straightforward, repeatable responsibilities and allow your team to build confidence. For example, a paralegal might take on drafting standard legal documents, or an assistant could manage calendar scheduling.

This approach not only helps you become more comfortable delegating but also empowers your team to develop new skills. And yes—mistakes may happen, but they’re part of the learning process.

4. Choose the Right People

When delegating, consider:

  • Who has the skills and interest to take on the task?
  • Who would benefit from the opportunity to grow?
  • Who has the bandwidth to handle additional work?

If you don’t have the right person internally, it might be time to invest in training or bring in outside support. Many firms rely on contract and temporary workers to maintain efficiency, to lighten the load, and meet shifting demands.

5. Provide Clear Direction, but Allow Autonomy

Successful delegation is about balance. You need to:

  • Clearly define the task and expectations
  • Set deadlines and communicate priorities
  • Provide guidance—but avoid micromanaging

As Kerpen puts it, “Delegate outcomes, not tasks.” Give your team the freedom to determine the best way to get the job done. Trust them to find solutions.

6. Follow Up Without Hovering

Delegating doesn’t mean disappearing. The key is to check in strategically:

  • Ask “How’s it going?” and “What roadblocks are you facing?”
  • Use project management tools to track progress instead of constant emails.
  • Encourage open communication and feedback.

By providing ongoing support without unnecessary interference, you create an environment where delegation becomes seamless and productive.

Effective delegation isn’t about offloading tasks—it’s about empowerment, efficiency, and growth. The legal field demands precision, but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything yourself.
